Use of weedicides has help to check weed growth. Fluchloralin @1.5kg a.i\/ha as pre sowing soil incorporation and Alachlor @ 2kg a.i\/ha as post sowing gives control of weeds.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Pest Control<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<p><strong>Leafhoppers (Amrasca biguttula biguttula)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both the adults and nymphs suck the cell sap. Nymphs move diagonally when disturbed. There are 10 to12 overlapping generations in a year. Plants lose their vitality and affected leaves turn yellow and curl upwards. When the infestation is high during summer, leaves turn brick red and show large necrotic spots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Apply neem cake @ 250 Kg\/ha to soil immediately after germination and repeat after 30 days. In the initial stages of crop before flowering spray systemic insecticide like <a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/crop-protection\/insecticides\/acephate\/\">Acephate<\/a> 75 SP (1ml\/l) or <a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/crop-protection\/insecticides\/imidacloprid\/\">Imidacloprid<\/a> (0.3 ml\/l). Once the fruit harvest starts avoid systemic insecticides. Spray neem or pongamia soaps @ 0.5% or pulverized neem seed powder extract (NSPE) 4% at the lower surface of the leaves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shoot and fruit borer (Earias vittella andE. insulana)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Female lays green coloured eggs with longitudinal ridges on buds, flowers and fruits. The infestation is seen on shoots before and after fl owering, feed exclusively on fruits. Infested shoots wither and wilt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Collect and destroy the aff ected fruits and stems. Apply neem cake @ 250 kg\/ha after germination and repeat two more times at 30 days interval and spray neem soap 1% or NSPE 4%. Spray at 10 days interval. During rainy season, spray eff ective contact insecticides like Indoxacarb 14.5 SC @ 0.75 ml\/l.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/crop-protection\/insects\/aphid\/\">Aphids<\/a> (Aphis gossypii)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a polyphagous pest, feeding in colonies and completely covers the shoot tips, buds and lower surface of leaves. Both nymphs and adults suck the sap. They also excrete honeydew on which sooty mould develops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clip and destroy infested shoots Thoroughly spray neem or pongamia soap (1%) or pulverized neem seed powder extract (NSPE) 4%. During pre-fl owering period spray systemic insecticides like Dimethoate 30 EC (2ml\/l) or Acephate 75 SP or Acetamiprid.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/white-fly\/\">Whitefly<\/a> (Bemesia tabaci)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is a polyphagous vector transmitting yellow vein mosaic disease (YVM). It lays eggs on the lower surface of leaves. Both the adult and the nymph feed by sucking leaf sap. They excrete honeydew, which results in sooty mould. At present many varieties and hybrids resistant to YVM are available in market and hence, disease management is very easy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Grow YVM resistant varieties\/hybrids Apply neem cake @ 250 kg\/ha at germination and again at 30 DAP followed by sprays of pulverized neem seed powder extract 4% or neem oil 1%.Spray <a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/crop-protection\/insecticides\/imidacloprid\/\">Imidacloprid<\/a> 200 SL @ 0.3ml\/l or <a href=\"https:\/\/cropinfo.in\/agriinfo\/crop-protection\/insecticides\/thiamethoxam\/\">Thiomethoxam<\/a> 0.3 gm\/l (should not be sprayed after flowering stage).<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Disease Control<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<p><strong>Diseases<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bhendi Yellow Vein Mosaic (YVMV-Gemini virus)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>Early infection causes 20-30% yield loss. Characteristic symptoms appears as prominent yellow vein and veinlets having green tissue interveinal area. Severely infected leaves some-time become completely golden yellow. Fruits develop green to yellow colour and become hard in early stage of growth. Finally the market value of the fruits will be reduced. The viral disease is transmitted by whitefly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seed treatment with Imidacloprid @ 5 ml per kg of seed. Use resistant variety Early sowing in last month of June to first week of July. Once or twice rouging of infected plants at initial<br \/>\nstage of plant growth. Periodical spray of any safe systemic insecticide upto flowering stage.<br \/>\nRemoval of malvaceous hosts around the field.<\/p>\n\n<\/div><h2 class=\"tabtitle\">Disorders<\/h2>\n<div class=\"tabcontent\">\n\n<p><strong>Disorders<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Poor seed germination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seed germinate poorly when soil temperature remains at or below 200C. The problem occurs during early spring summer cultivation when seeds are to be sown at low temperature condition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Control:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours.<br \/>\nSoaking the seeds in hot water at 450C for 1.5 hours.<br \/>\nSeed treatment with alcohol for half an hour.<br \/>\nWater soaked seeds after tying in a piece of cloth are put into a heap of fresh cow dung overnight.
